How does the World Cup work?
Currently, the World Cup sees 32 teams from across the world all competing for the chance to be crowned world champions. Initially, these 32 teams are seeded and drawn into eight groups of four, with the top two teams from each group then advancing to the last 16 stage of the tournament. From here, it is a straight knockout format, with the winner going home and the loser advancing through to the next round. If the match is a draw after 90 minutes, extra time will be used to separate them, while a penalty shootout will take place if the score still remains equal after a further 30 minutes of play. This format continues all the way up until and including the final, where the winner will then be crowned World Cup champions.
It has been announced that from 2026 onwards the tournament will feature 48 teams, where there will be 16 groups of three teams competing, with the top two teams from each group progressing through to the last 32 where the knockout stages will begin.
